"Dinkin" we all have to do it.

Here in the UK 7” records that can play on your jukebox need to have the centres removed.
In the USA large holed discs are the normal as the large hole is for 45 rpm and the small hole is usually 33 rpm.
Jukeboxes being mainly from the USA operate with the large hole 45’s.
However there is a device in some models of jukeboxes from about the 1960s which will play both large and small centre discs. It is called “intermix” originally designed to switch speed to 33 if a small hole was detected as there are some 7” records made for 33rpm. Interestingly for us the intermix can be adjusted so that it doesn’t change speed and always plays at 45 rpm so the hole in the centre of your records does not have to be altered so either type can play correctly at 45 rpm .
Records did have pop out centres but with the advent of the1970s most had solid centres and unless you have a jukebox with intermix then it is necessary to remove the solid centre.
Originally there was the original professional ‘dinker’ which is something to keep an eye out for but rarely found these days. I remember it being tucked away under the counter in the record shop, the shop would dink your single if you needed it.
These days there are various devices on the market and here at The Jukebox Man we have sold our hand operated device for well over 30 years.
The drawback with any process of centre removal even with the professional dinker is when you need to dink the 45s that do not have a paper label , ie: the modern types where the label is actually printed on to the plastic. These records tend to be made of very brittle plastic, not the quality of the old days !
We have found that whatever method used it is better to stick strips of masking tape across the centre on both sides before commencing reducing the breakage rate.
